Field notes

AI moves fast.
Infrastructure doesn't.

AI demand can change in months.
The infrastructure required to support it can take years.

That mismatch is becoming one of the defining challenges for digital infrastructure development.

Compute requirements evolve quickly. Capital moves quickly. Customer demand can appear in markets that weren’t previously a priority.

But transmission networks, substations, fibre routes, planning systems, construction capacity and equipment supply chains operate on very different timelines. You can’t accelerate every one of those simply because demand has arrived.

The question isn’t just where demand is. It’s where infrastructure can meet it.

For developers and investors, that requires looking beyond current market conditions.

Where is grid investment happening? Where is new fibre being deployed? Which locations have credible routes to additional capacity? Where could planning, labour or supply-chain constraints become the next bottleneck?

None of this removes uncertainty. But understanding the infrastructure trajectory of a market gives you a better chance of being positioned before demand and capacity collide.

AI may move fast. The advantage comes from understanding what can’t, and planning accordingly.
